کتاب الکترونیکی کتابی است در قالب دیجیتال. در طول تاریخ، کتاب‌ها متون دست‌نویس، چاپ انبوه با حروف متحرک. خواندن با صدای بلند به عنوان کتاب صوتی، فتوکپی، خرید، امانت، حاشیه‌نویسی و نمایه‌سازی بوده‌اند. و اکنون کتاب ها را می توان به صورت آنلاین در دستگاه های مختلف در هر مکان و هر زمان خواند!

کتاب‌های الکترونیکی به‌عنوان «کتاب‌های الکترونیکی»، «مجلات الکترونیکی»، «نسخه‌های الکترونیکی» یا «کتاب‌های دیجیتال» نیز شناخته می‌شوند. دستگاهی که به طور خاص برای خواندن کتاب های الکترونیکی طراحی شده است. “e-reader”، “ebook device” یا “eReader” نامیده می شود.

فرمت های کتاب الکترونیکی

با ظهور و تکثیر فرمت‌های کتاب الکترونیکی، برخی از شرکت‌های بزرگ نرم‌افزاری، مانند Adobe با فرمت PDF که در سال 1993 معرفی شد، از این بازار حمایت کردند. برخلاف اکثر فرمت‌های دیگر، اسناد PDF به‌جای تنظیم پویا با صفحه فعلی، پنجره یا اندازه دیگر، عموماً به ابعاد و طرح‌بندی خاصی گره خورده‌اند. دستگاه‌های کتابخوان الکترونیکی مختلف از فرمت‌های متفاوتی پیروی می‌کردند. اکثر آنها کتاب‌ها را تنها در یک یا چند قالب می‌پذیرفتند. در نتیجه بازار کتاب‌های الکترونیکی را بیش از پیش پراکنده کردند. به دلیل انحصاری بودن و محدود بودن تعداد خوانندگان کتاب های الکترونیکی، بازار نابسامان ناشران مستقل و نویسندگان تخصصی در مورد استانداردی برای بسته بندی و فروش کتاب های الکترونیکی اجماع نداشتند.

در همین حال، محققین روش رمزگذاری متن را ارائه دادند. در این روش دستورالعمل‌هایی را برای رمزگذاری کتاب‌ها و سایر مواد مورد علاقه علمی برای انواع کاربردهای تحلیلی و همچنین خواندن ایجاد کرد. آثار ادبی و دیگر آثار بی‌شماری با استفاده از رویکرد TEI توسعه یافته‌اند. در اواخر دهه 1990، کنسرسیومی برای توسعه فرمت کتاب الکترونیکی باز به عنوان راهی برای نویسندگان و ناشران برای ارائه یک منبع-سند واحد که بسیاری از پلتفرم‌های نرم‌افزاری و سخت‌افزاری از آن پشتیبانی‌ می‌کردند ارائه شد.

چندین محقق از TEI از نزدیک در توسعه اولیه کتاب الکترونیکی باز مشارکت داشتند. با تمرکز بر قابلیت حمل، کتاب الکترونیکی را به عنوان زیرمجموعه های مورد نیاز XHTML و CSS دسته‌بندی کردند. این کش و قوس‌ها منجر به تولد فرمت EPUB شد. Google Books بسیاری از آثار حوزه عمومی را به این قالب باز تبدیل کرده است.
