Disorientation is a novel by Elaine Hsieh Chou, a Taiwanese American writer. The novel is a satire of the literary world and the academic system, as well as a commentary on race, identity, and privilege in America. The novel follows Ingrid Yang, a PhD student who is writing her dissertation on Xiao-Wen Chou, a famous Chinese American poet. However, she discovers that Chou is actually a white man who has been pretending to be Chinese for decades, using makeup, wigs, and fake names.
